Under the line that states “Enter one keyword or phrase per line:”, type in some keyword phrases unique to your niche. There are many things to consider at this point. One of the most important facts to remember at this juncture is to remember that you are looking for a phrase, not just a solitary word. Tip: In general, the longer the keyword phrase, the more targeted it will be to your niche and the less saturated it will be. You may also want to consider common misspellings to find phrases with even less competition. If you are unable to be creative at this point, just type in some basic keyword combinations and Google’s Keyword tool will display many phrases to get you started.

For the purpose of demonstration, I will use the bedroom furniture niche to find phrases with high search volumes and low competition.

The obvious search phrases to start with are ones like bedroom furniture and bedroom suite, so I will start from there.  I searched using these 2 phrases and my results are displayed below.

First, let’s focus on the header.

Pay close attention to the Advertiser Competition and Global Monthly Search Volume columns, as these are the most important.  What you want to accomplish here is simple: find the keyword phrases with the a combination of the highest search volume and the lowest competition.  You can also target keyword phrases with large search volumes AND high competition, however, much more effort will be needed to be effective with these phrases (more backlinks).

Let’s move on to a small section of the results.  As seen below, we have circled two keyword phrases that have healthy search volumes and less than 100% competition.

We have selected two keyword phrases for the purpose of demonstration.  The phrase “bedroom furniture beds” has an extremely high search volume.  Although it is still fairly saturated at approximately 90%, the size of the search volume makes it a very valuable phrase.  The next phrase “broyhill bedroom furniture” is what some would call “low hanging fruit”.  It’s not very saturated and the search volume is on the low side.  However, this is still a great keyword phrase because it has the combination of low competition and decent search volume.  Tip: Keep in mind that many of these “low hanging fruit” phrases will also bring you HIGHLY targeted traffic due to the specificity of the phrase.

At this point, you would want to browse through the list of keyword phrases and record all of the good ones.  You can even click on the “add” button, do another search, and add more words to a list.  Once you’ve finished compiling your list of keywords, Google allows you to download them into several formats.

Once you’ve got your keywords, you are one step further in mastering the SERPs and ready to build your links.
